Hooray, it’s finally my turn! (In more ways than one, but to find out what I mean by that you’ll need to read my story in Myths and Mistletoe.)
I’m beyond excited to share my goals for the new year with you. Partly because I love sharing, and partly because it’s (probably) a scientific fact that sharing your goals publicly makes achieving them seventy-eight percent* more likely.

Without further chit-chat, here goes…
The New Year’s Resolutions of Marina Borealis
- Catch More Waves — In the past, I haven’t been the biggest risk taker. In fact, you might say, I’ve been a bit of a fraidy-fish when it comes to doing something when I’m not sure about the outcome. But I’ve recently realized that the problem with that way of living is that, while I’m mostly protected from big disappointments, I’m also keeping myself from fantastic surprises. If I keep doing what I’ve always done, nothing in my life will change. If I want big rewards, I’ll have to take big risks. I’m going to start small and work my way up to the big ones. Or, who knows, I might dive into the deep end on my first try. Either way, I’m done with playing it safe.
- Set Fins on Land — You might think all merfolk have made a trip to the mainland, but this mermaid has never transfigured herself some feet. Even if it’s just a quick visit to an uninhabited atoll, this is the year I’m going to walk on sand for the first time.
- Write More Kelpaper Notes — It’s so easy to send a message bubble! But I think writing kelpaper notes by hand is a dying art. Plus, I think the extra effort makes the recipient feel special. I’m going to try to write at least one per month.
- Learn to Sew — I have always admired the beautiful gowns that Princess Waterlily wears on royal occasions. Last year I got to visit the home studio of Mrs. Wentletrap, the princess’s seamstress. She offered to teach me. This year I’m going to take her up on the offer. By this time next year, I’ll make my own New Year’s gown!
- Enjoy the Swim — Life is a journey, not a destination. This is the most important goal of all. While I sometimes get too caught up in plans (overthinking, worry, etc—see first resolution), now that I’m in my last year of high school, I’m starting to realize that keeping my eye on the prize might have made me miss some wonderful views along the way. This year, I’m making myself a promise to stop and smell the anemones. If I spend all my time freaking out about my plans for the future, I’ll miss all the best parts of the present.
Wow! I’m excited to work on these goals all year long.
Now that I’ve shared mine, it’s your turn. What are YOUR goals for the new year?! (Remember, sharing them means they’re more likely to happen!!!)
Hugs, hearts, and starfish kisses!
Marina
