The Trocaire is one of the most important documents in the world of Darkly Fae. In this series, the magic of the dark fae (also called unseelie) is fed by negative human emotions. Things like pain, heartache, anger, and grief. Which leads some unscrupulous fae to intentionally cause harm to humans for magical gain.
This is where the Trocaire comes in.
Fae clans which have signed the Trocaire, including the Moraine, have vowed not to hurt humans. Overall, this weakens their powers and makes them more vulnerable to clans which have not made the same vow.
But doing what’s right isn’t always easy or safe.
The Trocaire
On this, the 12th day of the 7th month of the 1497th year, we the people of the Clan Moraine declare our allegiance to the Trocaire and enact such allegiance as law. From this day forward, any act of maru iobartach is a violation of the law of the Moraine. Any member of the Clan Moraine that seeks to kill a human for the purpose of increasing their own magic shall be subject to the harshest punishment known to fae.
When a case arises in which a member of the clan is suspected of maru iobartach, the council shall, under the guidance of the prevailing monarch, conduct a trial to seek the truth of the accusation. If the council cannot reach unanimous opinion on the guilt of the accused, the head of the clan shall make the final decision as to guilt or innocence.
If an accusation of maru iobartach is cast against any member of the royal family, then the reigning head of the clan shall be exempt from the trial in order to protect the council from undue bias or influence.
Such shall be the rule of law from this day forward, as signed by Queen Bridget and King Nechtan of the Clan Moraine.
