Hi there, mermaid fans! Today I have a special treat for you to celebrate the release of Pretty in Pearls in hardcover.
The story’s star, Periwinkle Wentletrap, is a big fan of pirates. Or at least merguys who resemble pirates. π So, in honor of her favorite pirate-y merguy, she wants to share her top ten pirate(ish) movies.
I’ll let her tell you all about them…
Why hello, fans of TLC! I’m so excited to tell you all about my favorite pirate movies. Okay, so some of them aren’t specifically about pirates, but I think you’ll get a pirate vibe from them anyway.
Without further ado, here we go!
Peri’s Top Ten Pirate(ish) Movies
Since I can’t really pick a favorite, I’m just going to list them in chronological order.
- Swiss Family Robinson β A family gets shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island. They have to deal with pirates, wildlife, and plenty of other challenges. But they also get to live in a treehouse!
- Pirates of Penzance β A musical by Gilbert and Sullivan about a young pirate who falls in love with a fair maiden and tries to leave his indentured service, to hilarious results. (I know every song by heart!)
- The Goonies β A group of young boys finds a map that they hope will lead them to a legendary pirate treasure so they can save the homes from being turned into a golf course.
- The Princess Bride β A young boy’s grandfather reads him a story about a farm boy who supposedly died at sea actually becomes a pirate and returns to rescue his childhood love.
- Hook β Decades after Peter Pan left Neverland, he’s forgotten it even exists. Until Captain Hook kidnaps his children and he has to return to Neverland to save them.
- Captain Ron β When a suburban family inherits an old wooden yacht in the Caribbean, they hire a questionable captain to help them sail to Miami so they can sell it. Many adventures ensue!
- Muppet Treasure Island β Who doesn’t love the Muppets? Especially when they’re on a high seas adventure based on the novel, Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson.
- Six Days, Seven Nights β A magazine editor and a swashbuckling pilot who hate each other (at first!) crash land on an uninhabited island, and have to find a way to survive and get rescued.
- Treasure Planet β A science fiction, space travel version of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story, in which a rebellious teen get a map from a dying pirate and sets off on a galactic adventure.
- Pirates of the Caribbean β A blacksmith teams up with a pirate to save his love from a cursed captain. The pirate, of course, has schemes of his own in the works. Possibly the most pirate-y movie of them all. It’s also my favoriteβand not just because Captain Jack Sparrow reminds me of Riatus.
Well there you have it. If you’re in a pirate mood, you’ll definitely want to check out some (or all!) of these movies. (TLC even made an IMDb list so it’s super easy for you!)
And remember, never walk the plank when you can ask for a parley instead!
