What straight-A student and all-around good mergirl Coral Ballenato wants is to forget her longtime crush on her best friend’s older brother. Four years of pining from not-so-afar is more than enough. Moving on should be easy now that he’s swum off to college.
Until Zak Marlin comes home for a charity event, newly-single and begging her to be his pretend girlfriend for the week.
She should say no…but surely she can handle playing the role of Zak’s sweetheart. After all, she’s been dreaming about it for years. She just has to make sure her heart is braced for the inevitable end.
But when every minute they spend together makes her fall deeper and deeper for the merguy she’s always loved, how will Coral ever be able to move on when the week is over?
Tera Lynn Childs may pretend to be a goddess, but she’s really just a normal person. Well, maybe not normal. She is a writer, after all. Her works include the mythology-based Oh. My. Gods. series, the Forgive My Fins mermaid romance series, the kick-butt monster-hunting Sweet Venom trilogy, and the Darkly Fae fantasy series. Tera currently parks her laptop in the Seattle area and spends her time writing wherever she can find a comfy chair and a steady stream of caffeinated beverages. Forgive My Fins 5.0. Coral has had a crush on her BF’s brother all through HS, even 47 days after he left for college. Just as she almost convinces herself to give up, she literal bumps into him.
This situation is very similar to what happened with Lilly. And not much here really relates to being a mermaid. It could very easily be normal HS kids. There’s not a lot of plot, it’s mostly just Coral mooning over her years of dreaming about divine Zak or moaning about the hopelessness of the situation. But the end really makes up for it. I knew it was coming, but I was sobbing
The narrator in this version sounds slightly nasal and/or monotonous most of the time, like she has a cold or something.
Fave scenes: the news traveling across the lunchroom, the Karaoke and Coral helping Zak with his speech.
Cute quirky book and I love that’s it is an easy read but still a good story. I am loving that the author added more short stories to this. Loved mermaid mythology ever since I was a kid. Can’t wait to read what’s next
I love being in this world; I could take a new story in Thalassinia yearly. This one wasn’t my favourite, but I love seeing other characters get their own stories.
